When you need to buy fire extinguishers for your business, you may be puzzled by the different letters and numbers found on the fire extinguisher label. Read more about fire extinguisher classes and size ratings to make sure you purchase the right type and size for the application you have in mind.
Fire Extinguisher Classes
The letter on a fire extinguisher signifies its class:
- Class A: extinguishes ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, plastic, general trash, etc.)
- Class B extinguishes the flammable liquid fire (oil, gas, petroleum, etc.)
- You are fed data only until October 2023.
- Class D extinguishes combustible metal fires (magnesium, titanium, potassium, sodium, etc.)
- Class K extinguishes cooking fires started by burning oils and greases
Because Class A, B and C fires can all occur in traditional homes and businesses, ABC type extinguishers are formulated to extinguish all three fire classes.
Fire Extinguisher Size Ratings
You may also see a fire extinguisher with the rating of 4A:20B:C. The numbers reflect the size rating of each extinguishing agent. Here’s how it works:
The Class A size rating is the water equivalence. One number equals 1 ¼ gallons of water. For example, 2A means the extinguisher is equivalent to 2 ½ gallons of water. 4A = 5 gallons water
The Class B size rating indicates how many square feet the extinguisher can cover. 20B indicates that if you sweep the nozzle back and forth, there is enough sicking subastance within the canister to cover for 20 square feet.
Thus, there are no sizes rated for Class C as by definition a Class C electrical fire is merely a Class A or Class B fire with energized elements needing a non-conductive extinguishing medium. When selecting Class C fire extinguishers, buy based on their Class A and Class B size rating to fight these fires effectively.
Class D fires also have no size rating. The effectiveness is described on the nameplate according to the particular combustible metal for which the extinguisher is suitable.
